William Phelps lehrte 41 Jahre lang englische Literatur an der Yale-Universität, bis er 1933 in den Ruhestand ging. Kurz vor Weihnachten eines Jahres korrigierte Phelps eine Prüfungsarbeit und stieß auf die Notiz: "Nur Gott kennt die Antwort auf diese Frage. Frohe Weihnachten."
